Rotary Die cutting is a process used to cut repetetive shapes from sheet materials such as cardboard, leather, fabrics, thin metals, rubber, cork, gasket materials and plastics.
The cutting process is done using a die sometimes known as a strip steel die or die cutting knife. The die cutting knife is acurately bent into shape or welded and fixed to a strong backing board to hold the shape. Cutting dies often incorporate creasing bars and ejection rubbers.
Most common uses for die cutting are the cutting of carboard boxes, gasket cutting, cutting of leather pieces for manufacture of shoes, handbags etc, Cutting of filter mesh, cutting of fibrous matting and more.
When cutting of continuous blanks from a strip of material is required, another cutting method is used known as rotary die cutting. This process is when the cutting die is formed and fixed around a rotating mandrel and the shapes are cut at higher speeds as the material is fed through in a strip.
Rotary die cutting machines have an internal scrap stripper for separating the scrap material from the product portion of the cut strip.
